There have been some pretty devastating headlines about youtube recently including the disgusting Logal Paul situtations and the dreadful LGBTQ+ age restrictions. It’s a shame that drama can overshadow the endless quantity of really great stuff that is happening over on Youtube. Youtube is infact the 2nd most used search engine after google. I wanted to take the time to share some really cool channels, and artist doing really amazing beautiful high quality thoughtful videos. Every so often, if I’m feeling a bit unmotivated, I will head to youtube and go to one of these channels. These are in no order I love them all equally like a mother with many children, or an illustrator with many favourite pens. Enjoy.
Holly is an amazing freelance watercolour illustrator, she currently lives in the beautiful Derbyshire countryside with cute 2 dogs. She posts vlogs documenting her studio days including what she eats as a vegan. I love how passionate she is about veganism and I also love the food she makes, I’ve made pretty much everything she has filmed, and it’s all easy and delicious. She also posts informative and helpful advice videos, and occasionally really funny videos with her partner like this one. I really relate to Holly, she talks openly about being a shy introvert with anxiety, and shares her challenges with an honesty we don’t see much of in the creative world. I picked one of her beautiful vlogs to share here, but defiantly check out her advice videos because they are really great.
Out of this whole list this is the one I’ve been subscribed to the longest. Sonia is a visual artist who grew up in Indonesia, she started posting on youtube as a teen. From the beginning, she has been creating mind blowing beautiful films, that are a work of multimedia artistry. Speaking her own journal entries or poetry in her soft voice, over a range of mediums such as stop motion, slow motion, paint and playful lights. Every single one of her videos is jam packed with layers, she makes films that every time you watch you notice something you’ve never noticed before, something new. She has her own channel and also a series on Soul Pancake, one of my favourites is this one below.
Shantel is known for her stream-of-consciousness drawings, her positive personality and powerful energy comes through in her art and into her videos. Relatively new to the youtube game. After seeking advice from how to take on the new media from casey Neistat (one of the kings of youtube) she has started posting incredibility thoughtful content. She documents behind the scenes of her work, including time lapses, interviews, collaborations, studio tours and her travels around the world. It’s fascinating to see what a life as an artist is like, and the chance get a look a little look into the life of an otherwise elusive career.
Furry little peach
Shaman D’anthea Aka Fuzzy little peach is a visual artist in Australia, she creates studio vlogs which show her process with painting and drawing, and adds in Q&A’s answering questions she gets from viewers. Her bubbly personality shines through her videos, while also not sugar coating the handwork it takes to make good work. I love how she discusses the downfalls of the word motivation and instead wants to encourage the word discipline. Her studio space is amazing, even though I don’t paint I really love the way she shares her work and her personality is such a beautiful ray of sunshine that I have needed in these dark english winter months.
Also known as Fran Menses but the internet knows her as frannerd is a Chilean freelance illustrator living in the beautiful english coast of Hastings, Frannerd has coined the word “illustuber”(an illustrator on youtube) her illustrations are warm and comforting and delicately uplifting. Frans channel consistent of beautifully shot vlogs which include the behind the scenes of her process and also videos with really detailed advice for young budding creatives. Fran is like every illustrators big sister, you have a question about illustration chances are Fran has a video all about it. Lots of illustrators I know watch Fran when felling a bit of a creative block come on, and I totally do the same. I also had the lovely opportunity of meeting fran and she is so so sooo lovely.
